"Until It Hurts" Preview: Day 5

February 17, 2017

I’m Dedicated...For The Most Part

Verse of the Day: Matthew 6:24

“You cannot be the slave of two masters! You will like one more than the other or be more loyal to one that the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (CEV)

“You can’t worship two gods at once. Loving one god, you’ll end up hating the other. Adoration of one feeds contempt for the other. You can’t worship God and Money both.” (MSG)

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (NLT)

“No one can serve two masters. Wither you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (NIV)

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (KJV)

FORETHOUGHT What does this verse mean to you? Take a minute and write down your thoughts.

LET’S TALK

In undergrad, I never met a student organization I didn’t like. In my four (AUsome) years of college, I joined several organizations and subsequently became a leader in most of them before graduation. Oh, and at some point I actually attended classes!

At first, I was able to manage my many memberships with ease. I learned how to balance and convinced myself that each organization received my absolute best. Suddenly, the demands of one organization grew, and my commitment followed suit. In my head, I was still convinced that I was giving my all to each of them, but in my heart I had certainly picked a favorite.

How many times have we tried to balance several things in life but still picked a favorite? How many times has that favorite not been Christ?

We hold on to so many ideas, people, and desires. In our minds, we are certain we can give our hearts to everything and still give our all to following Christ. The truth of the matter is, our hearts only have room for one favorite.

Christ does not yearn to be one of the things we’re dedicated to in this life. Christ yearns to be the one we’re dedicated to for life.

PRAYER

Father, I am humbled to be in your presence today. You have showed yet again how faithful you are in the midst of creating me to be the servant You desire me to be. At no point have You allowed my shortcomings to dictate how powerful You are. Thank You for consistently being You even as I have inconsistently sought You in my life. Today, allow me to believe and understand that I can only have one favorite and that favorite is You, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

REFLECT

Be honest. It’s only you and God.

1. What are you dedicated to today?

2. How have you been more dedicated to stuff more than Christ?

3. How can realign your dedication today?
